EPROM Programmer
Untested boards rarely have all their socketed EPROM’s and dead boards often have problems with their code. Therefore an EPROM programmer is an essential piece of kit for troubleshooting and also identifying unknown boards (you can ROMIDENT them). Of course this is also an expensive piece of kit and the temptation will be to buy a cheap one on eBay or something.
Don’t forget though that older programmers like the Leaper-3 shown below:
These aren’t supported anymore… Far better to buy a cheaper model but BRAND
new one which offers software updates/revisions like the Galep4. One thing to
look for when buying though is that we work on very old boards, ensure the
programmer you’re buying can at the very least program on 2732’s, even better
still - 2716’s.
You’ll probably not need one that does 2708’s and one that
programs bi-polar EPROM’s would be far too expensive… Just read the
technical specifications before you purchase!
